Sutton Green under renewed threat of closure – Golf News

A fresh bid to redevelop Sutton Green Golf Club for housing has placed the future of the Surrey venue in doubt once again after plans for 650 homes were lodged with Woking Borough Council.

The proposal would see the full closure of the 18 hole course and demolition of the clubhouse and all associated facilities to make way for a major residential scheme on the land currently occupied by the club near Woking.

New housing scheme submitted after earlier bid failed

Club owners previously sought permission in 2022 to transform the site into a retirement community with up to 200 houses and a 66 bed care home. That application was withdrawn after failing to gain approval.

The latest submission, brought forward by Quinn Estates last month, is far larger in scale. It includes 650 private homes, a care home, commercial space and a country park, alongside parking and infrastructure across the course footprint.

Green Belt status disputed by residents

Planning assessors acting for the developer have argued the land contributes only moderately or weakly to Green Belt purposes and should instead be treated as Grey Belt. That interpretation has been strongly challenged by local residents, many of whom have lodged objections through the council planning portal.

Public comments on the application can be made until March 13. Woking Borough Council planning committee will then begin its determination process, which will decide whether golf at Sutton Green will continue or come to a permanent end.
