Putter fitting has so many aspects that it can be a bit difficult for golfers to wrap their minds around all of it.

In addition to figuring out if you have an arc stroke or a straight stroke, there are options for face balancing, toe hang, lie angle, and even hosel offset choices on your next putter.

However, before you purchase a putter, we highly recommend you get an idea about certain features, such as single bend vs. double bend putter shafts. Let’s take a look at the differences between these two styles and which is going to be the best for your game.

Overview of a Single Bend Putter Shaft

A single bend putter shaft has a minimal bend in the shaft about the width of half the shaft. This allows your hands to be slightly more in line with the ball. The putter will be just slightly offset, and most of the time, this bend is located just above the hosel location on the golf putter.

The single bend putter shaft is very common on a blade style putter, and it is known as a great club for the straight back straight through putting stroke.

Overview of a Double Bend Putter Shaft

The double bend putter shaft has two bends in the putter as opposed to the single bend putter shaft. With double bend, putters expect a higher MOI and even more offset. The double bend putter shafts tend to have a bit more accuracy on those shots that miss the center of the clubface.

Interestingly the double bend putter shaft is also a good option for the golfers with the straight back and straight through putting stroke. Golfers that like to keep more stability in the putter and ensure that there is less twisting in the face will enjoy this style.

Differences Between a Single Bend and Double Bend Putter Shaft

The main difference between the double bend and single bend putter shaft will be the hand placement and the offset of the putter. However, putters with more and less offset will perform differently on the course.

Although a lot of the decision as to whether to use a single bend or double bend shaft will come down to personal preference, it pays to understand exactly what to expect here.

Look at Address

The look at the address between a single bend and a double bend is considerably different. The single bend has very little offset and a more straight look to the putter head from the top down. This tends to be a better overall look for the lower handicap player that likes that smooth transition.

The double bend putters, although helpful from a forgiveness standpoint, will have a more detailed look that can be almost overwhelming for some players. If you like a clean and simple look, the double bend putter shaft is likely not the best solution for your game.

Offset

Offset is something that we see in almost any club in the bag. Whether you are purchasing a driver, hybrids, wedges, or irons, offset is a piece of the puzzle that will come into play. The more offset a clubhead is, the further behind your hands it will be at address.

The goal of an offset club is to help players that struggle to square up the face have a little extra time to do so before impact. Most golfers that slice the ball, or in the case of putting, those that hit it off the toe, will be more likely to benefit from offset.

The double bend putter, because of the two bends in the shaft, is going to have a slightly more offset design than the standard single bend putter shaft. Players who tend to have a hard time keeping the clubface square can trust that a double bend shaft will help them.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is becoming more and more important in putters, not just for beginners but for lower handicappers as well. The common terminology you will see for putter forgiveness is MOI or moment of inertia. The putters with the highest MOI will have the most forgiveness.

Most of the time, the mallet style putter with a double bend shaft will lead the way when it comes to forgiveness. A blade putter that has a single bend shaft will be less forgiving. Many golfers have a very consistent putting stroke with high levels of accuracy.

These players can use any different style putter head and shaft combination they would like. As long as the roll coming from the club head is a good one, players should be pleased with their progress.

Availability

Custom putter fitting is getting increasingly popular, but it still can be hard to find the exact putter you are looking for. Not all manufacturers offer options for single bend or double bend putter shafts in each of their models.

You may have to get a custom fitting done to find the right shaft configuration for your new putter. In addition, both the single bend and the double bend putters are designed for the straight back and straight through style stroke with high levels of consistency.

If you are set on a particular type of putter and can’t find it, talk to a local golf club repair shop and see their custom capabilities. Chances are, you will be able to find something that fits your needs.

Stability

A golf putter that is stable at impact will produce a much better roll. However, stability in a putter is not only impacted by the golf putter a player uses but also by the stroke. Players that want ultimate stability should consider the double bend putter shaft.

Most of the time, the double bend putter shaft is something that has a face balanced design and a little more stability in the overall putter head. Golfers that use this double bend putter shaft should stick with a straight back and straight through style and keep the wrists and hands out of the stroke.

Who Should Use a Single Bend Putter?

A single bend putter tends to be the best option for the golfer that wants a clean look at the address, one that sets them up for more accuracy and consistency. Many times players with lower handicaps are going to have a hard time finding a putter that looks good to them at address.

Typically speaking, the better a player gets, the harder it is to please this golfer’s eye. With higher handicappers, the look of a golf club is not quite as much of a concern, and it can often be something that the player overcomes.

Lower handicap players like the single bend putter because it makes it easier to square the clubface up and have a look that allows you to make more one-putts on the golf course. As with all golf equipment, nothing states a higher handicapper can’t use a double bend, but it may not be as beneficial.

Who Should Use a Double Bend Putter?

The double bend putter shaft adds some forgiveness to the golf club. With this extra forgiveness in the putter, higher handicap golfers find it to be a good fit for their game. Overall higher handicapped golfers tend to struggle with some inconsistency in their putting stroke. These players have difficulty squaring the clubface up perfectly and getting the ball to roll on the same line.

With the double bend putter shaft, players can focus more on their distance control and be more confident that the putter face will be square when the club returns to the impact position.

The extra offset of the double bed putter makes this a perfect choice for any golfer in the mid to high handicap range, as well as a beginner.

The putters Fitzpatrick trusts on Tour, now available to golfers worldwide for the first time.

Out on the PGA Tour, when one player starts to have success with something, it doesn’t take long for others to take notice and try it for themselves.

Specifically, putters catch fire more often than other clubs.

In recent years, the Jailbird craze of 2023 is an obvious example, with Rickie Fowler, Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley all winniung with Jailbird Cruisers in the span of two months. This year, hordes of pros have flocked to TaylorMade’s Spider putters after the boatloads of wins by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Now, Cam Young’s Phantom 9.5R has the potential to be the next hot putter.

This week, Justin Thomas made a switch to an essential copy of the putter after Young won the Players Championship and the Cadillac Championship over the past month and a half.

Justin Thomas has a new Phantom 9.5R putter that is basically a copy of Cam Young’s putter.

It’s Thomas’ second switch in a month after he benched his Phantom 5.5 gamer midway through the RBC Heritage last month and played well on the weekend using a backup Newport 2 GSS blade.

He continued using that putter last week, but at Quail Hollow, he wanted to find something that would stick long term. He had worked himself nearly back to 0 strokes gained: putting after a disastrous start to his season at Bay Hill, before a rough opening two rounds at Harbour Town. He lost strokes with the blade last week in Miami.

“Some of it is just calibration. … some of it is just, he, you know, the potential of making good putts but not seeing anything go in type of thing,” Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Brad Cloke told GOLF. “It just seemed like he kind of wanted to start a little bit from scratch this week.”

So he asked for a couple of new putters, including some 9.2Rs, a shape he used previously, and a copy of Cam Young’s 9.5R.

“I literally texted Cameron’s guys and said, ‘Just give me Cam’s putter,’” Thomas said Friday, who played with Young the first two days.

“Obviously, with the success that Cam is having … these guys are as they see success and they want to see what it’s all about potentially,” Cloke said.

In addition to having a low-bend shaft that mimics the look and toe hang of a jet neck, Thomas’s 5.5 also has smooth face milling that makes it a bit louder-sounding and firmer.

His new putter matches Young’s so it has mid-milled face, but he’s actually preferred the milling on the new 9.5R.

“It was more so of like, ‘Hey, this is different, but I’m kind of liking it,’” Cloke said. “The comment that I heard from him was about feel, but it was more so like, ‘I’m actually surprised I like the way this feels.’”

While the putter is Thomas’ spec length and has his grip, it has the same graphite shaft Young uses and a full-length sight line. Thomas found that made it super easy to line up.

“It’s just so hard to putt well if you don’t have confidence, and so hard to have confidence unless you’re seeing it go in more often,” Thomas said. “So I really, really worked hard Monday through Wednesday on my speed and start line and everything to where I just felt like I was in a better place and more freed up when I was putting.”

Through two rounds, it’s been highly successful as Thomas sits at seven under going into the weekend and is gaining nearly three strokes on the field, good for top 10 in the stat.

Sahith Theegala’s newest putter wasn’t random, finally

While the biggest story in Ping putters was Tony Finau’s bizarre technique with a prototype Oslo Onset long putter early in the week, he ended up going back to the Scottsdale Tec Ally Blue Onset he switched to in February.

In fact, Ping’s Ally Blue headshape had a solid week, earning two high-profile conversions, one so surprising Ping Tour Rep Kenton Oates didn’t even take it seriously.

Sahith Theegala, who, as we profiled in Bag Spy this week, loves to practice with random putters every week on the PGA Tour before returning to his longtime Anser gamer, was losing a putting contest on the practice green using an Ally Blue H when Oates hollered over for him to try his gamer.

“He goes, ‘This is what I used Sunday of Cadillac,’” Oates said. “And I go, ‘What? 
He goes, ‘Yeah, I think I’m going to use it on Thursday.’”

Theegala followed through on Thursday in the first round of the Truist Championship and kept it in the bag for Friday as well.

Turns out, this wasn’t another random practice putter for Theegala; this is something he worked on with Ping Principal Design Engineer Tony Serrano. He’s actually had the putter for over a year.

Theegala started working on a mallet putter with Serrano, feeling like he could gain forgiveness over his Anser blade.

“The key thing for him is, he has a certain stroke, a certain rotation in his stroke that requires something with some toe down,” Serrano said. “He’s always played an Anser 2 that hang at that 40 or 42 degrees that work perfectly for his stroke.”

“Post-Augusta we went back and looked at the data and he was actually getting center strikes that were drawing too much,” TaylorMade Tour rep Keith Sbarbaro said. “So the club was acting like he was toeing it. It was kind of gear-affecting left.
 
“So what we did is we moved the CG a little more toward the toe to try and square that up. The other thing he was getting some under-spinning shots that were knuckling a little bit.”

With the new 3-wood, Sbarbaro said McIlroy hit eight shots that all spun between 3,100 and 3,300 RPM and flew right on target. That’ll do!

As Rory McIlroy put the finishing touches on his second straight Masters win, 144 miles away, James Holley watched with the TV blaring from a TaylorMade Tour truck.

He was already on-site for this week’s RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, but he couldn’t miss this moment — especially since he played a part in it.

“It’s always fun to see a putter you have a little bit a part of win on Sunday,” says Holley, TaylorMade’s putter rep and the man responsible for maintaining McIlroy’s Spider putter, the same one he used to win a green jacket last year as well. “And especially in a major it’s awesome.”

Holley will be a busy man on the putting green at Harbour Town as well, but it won’t faze him. That’s basically been the case every week this season on the PGA Tour.

In a lot of ways, it’s fitting that a Spider putter won the Masters yet again. The putter family has won all but two Masters since 2020 and won three of the four majors last season. It was the winningest putter on the PGA Tour last year with 15 victories.

But the hype around the putter has hit a fever pitch to begin 2026 as pros seek to copy what is working for others. With McIlroy’s win at Augusta, that marks six wins by five different players already this season, including five of the first six events of the year.

McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, who finished second at the Masters, account for the majority of those victories last season, but the residual effects of their success are evident in other players.

New pros are adding the putter seemingly every week, including names like Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa, who won with a flow neck Spider Tour X after years of waffling between putters, mostly blade models.

“It’s definitely the hot putter and a lot of players you wouldn’t necessarily think want to try to tinker and switch into the putter have come up and we’ve built putters for them,” Holley said during an interview in March, just after Jacob Bridgeman won the Genesis Invitational with a Spider Tour. “It’s a good spot to be in.”

Holley sits firmly in the middle of all that success as TaylorMade’s putter rep, a job he’s had since the summer of 2024. In that time, Spider usage on the PGA Tour has exploded, in part led by Scheffler’s switch earlier that spring.

But just about everyone who has switched since, like Tommy Fleetwood, who got “Spidered” last spring, Holley has been the one helping them through the fitting and building process on the practice green.

Holley had aspirations of being the guy fitted for putters, not necessarily the one doing the fitting.

He was a standout junior golfer and played at San Diego State from 2013 to 2015, the same time Xander Schauffele was an Aztec. In the spring of his junior season, he captured his only collegiate victory at the WIU/Carlton Oaks Invitational.

While he was in school, he also did product testing for TaylorMade, whose headquarters are in nearby Carlsbad. That introduced him to TaylorMade Tour reps Ryan Ressa, who took care of Holley’s club needs in college, and Bucky Coe, TaylorMade’s putter rep at the time.

Holley played the mini tours and worked as an instructor on the side, but he found out that life wasn’t for him.

“I have a family, so it got kind of old,” Holley says.
”You know, making a lot of money one month and then no money the next month.”

It was around this time when Coe transitioned out of his role as TaylorMade’s Tour putter rep and posted the job on his Instagram. A lifelong putter nerd, Holley pounced on the opportunity.

“I’ve always kind of been a putter-tinker and would always jump on like the Quintic here and test a bunch of different stuff,” Holley says. “That’s probably what makes me a good tour rep but didn’t make me a good tour pro. The amount of putter knowledge I have is probably not super great for, you know, playing golf.”

He got the job on a Monday in August 2024 and flew to Memphis that evening for the first round of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. The first person he was introduced to was Tommy Fleetwood, who ended up being one of his first major success stories.

At the end of 2024, Fleetwood was beginning his search for a new putter to replace his longtime Odyssey White Hot Pro 3 blade. The first try was a TaylorMade Prototype Truss Soto blade. The Truss putter line was released in 2020 and featured a unique triangular hosel that was aimed at reducing the twisting forces of the putter on mishits while retaining a traditional look.

Fleetwood had two different versions of his Truss prototype before Holley approached him in early 2025 about switching into a Spider.

“That’s the kind of art of being the rep of trying to go up to a guy who’s maybe been struggling, and if it’s the right time to ask him if he wants to try a putter or not,” Holley says. “I had been watching him putt for the last six to nine months, an hour each day during the week.”

The key, Holley says, is never pushing a move on a player. While much of his job revolves around being ready for when a curious player walks up to his bag stationed at the putting green, the real work is biding his time to know when he’s going to approach a player.

The results for Fleetwood speak for themselves. He was 84th on the PGA Tour in SG: Putting entering the RBC Heritage and was 15th at the end of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The putter change sparked the best summer of Fleetwood’s career, culminating in his first PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship, another victory at the DP World India Championship and a career-high World Ranking (3rd).

At his breakthrough at East Lake, he led the field in putting, picking up more than eight shots over the week on the greens.

Fleetwood liked the milled True Path alignment aid on the Spider ZT, so Holley drew Sharpie lines on the top of the Spider Tour and Fleetwood liked it so much he stuck with that version until the Texas Open this season. (Holley redrew those lines by hand every few weeks, but it was worth it.)

The same success story holds true for TaylorMade’s two other top-ranked athletes. Scheffler was 143rd in SG: Putting during the 2024 season before making the switch to the Spider at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He improved to 69th by the end of 2024 and 18th by his final start of 2025.

McIlroy was 97th in 2018, the year before he started dabbling with the Spider. In the 2019 season, when he won three times, including the Players Championship and Tour Championship, he was 25th. Last year, his first full season using the custom torched Spider Tour X, he finished in the top 10 in putting for the first time in his career.

What makes the Spider so successful at taking long-time blade users and turning them into some of the top putters on the PGA Tour?

Take it from Holley himself, who was a blade guy most of his playing career until he started using a Spider.

He was — and still is, as his Handicap Index is +5.4 — an extremely high-level player, giving him a unique perspective to pitch the Spider to Tour pros.

But the thing that makes the Spider tick, Holley says, is TaylorMade’s Pure Roll insert.

The insert is made from a blend of Surlyn and aluminium and has grooves angled at 45˚ that are supposed to help you produce immediate forward roll on your putts instead of skidding. The most common insert on Spiders on Tour is the 80/20 variant with 80 percent Surlyn and 20 percent aluminum, but Holley can also do a fully Surlyn insert to soften the feel or add more aluminum to make it more responsive.

“Any of the guys that have switched like Scottie or Tommy, they see such a big improvement inside that 20 feet,” Holley says. “Especially out on Tour, that’s where those guys make their money. Statistically, the best putter and the worst putter from 30 feet, there isn’t that big of a difference from a strokes-gained perspective.”

After Scheffler’s putter switch, he went from 151st from inside 10 feet in 2023 to 33rd last season.

That kind of statistical success is crucial for Holley, whose job is much different than a Tour rep dedicated to full swing clubs.

Early in the week on a PGA Tour practice green, the perimeter is lined with staff bags, each with dozens of putters leaned up against them, just asking to be rolled. The putter reps stand nearby, waiting to spring into action. But because of the Spider’s success, players visit Holley often, curious about what so many pro are using and winning with.

Technically, Holley’s first putter switch was McIlroy’s move to the torched Spider Tour X at the 2024 Tour Championship.

“All I did on that was punch in the email,” he jokes. “So that was the extent of the switch that I had there.”

Holley also plays a role in the week-to-week maintenance of the putters. He takes care of loft and lie checks and regrippings, like the one he did for McIlroy at Bay Hill last month, the same putter that’s now responsible for two consecutive Masters wins and potentially many more victories.

While McIlroy probably won’t change any time soon, these things have a domino effect. Not only will more players be curious to try a Spider after yet another win, but TaylorMade is launching a whole new line of Spiders on the PGA Tour this week, presumably the first step of a new retail release later this year. (From what Holley and TaylorMade are willing to divulge at this point, it doesn’t look like there’s been much of a change to the shape of the uber-successful Spider Tour or Tour X shapes, nor the Pure Roll Insert. But a new Spider Tour V and Spider Tour X are joining the fray.)

But for Holley, there’s little time to celebrate. Back on Hilton Head Island, his week just got a whole lot busier.

The TaylorMade Select ST Cart bag kicks off the mid-range products with a robust top structure, full-length dividers, sufficient storage space, and 7 colors to choose from. Its moderate price point and exceptional organization are ideal for mid and high-handicappers seeking a reputable brand.

A 15-way top setup and full-length dividers ensure that each club receives a separate slot, making them easy to add or remove. Plus, a dedicated putter slot caters to jumbo grips. You’ll notice that the full-length dividers prevent your shafts from colliding while you walk and scratch one another.

Although the Select ST Cart bag carries fewer pockets than other designs, I found it sufficient to hold what I needed. It featured parts for my rangefinder, golf balls, apparel, and beverages. However, golfers who prepare for every scenario may prefer extra compartments.

Lastly, you’ll appreciate the accessory loop,  with a velcro attachment that allows you to store your glove outside the bag during your round.

The Founders Club Premium Cart bag is a mid-range model featuring a 14-way top divider and a putter well. In addition, I was impressed by the storage setup, design options, and overall quality of the construction.

You’ll notice that the bag provides a 14-way top, giving each club a private slot. Plus, a putter well that fits grips up to 1 ¾ inch in diameter. Unfortunately, it does not cater to jumbo SuperStroke putter grips.

I noticed the 9 zippered compartments offered plenty of space to carry everything needed on the golf course. The two long side apparel pockets were deep and held all my rain gear, while the insulated cooler section kept my beverages ice cold. In addition, the velour lined valuables pocket design protected my watch, phone, and wallet.

Finally, I appreciated that Founders Club offered these cart bags in 8 colors, to appeal to all golfers. My main gripe with this product is that it struggles to hold clubs with extended shaft lengths. For example, an extra 0.5-inches sees your clubs stick out like a sore thumb.

4. Mizuno BR-D4C Cart Bag

Pros

• Maximum storage space

• Full length dividers prevent scratches to your shafts
• Push cart notch keeps the bag fastened to the trolley or car
• Rubberized grip handles

Cons

• Expensive compared to other cart bags
• It is challenging to access some of the pockets

We turn up the heat on our best golf bags with a putter well list as we move towards mid and premium-priced products. The Mizuno BR-D4C earns a place at the table thanks to its optimal storage space and quality construction.

Mizuno opted for a 14-way top of the bag design and went the extra mile to include a full-length divider setup. You’ll find that your clubs remain separated to prevent scratches and the clubs entangling.

Now for the impressive part. The designers managed to place 20 side pockets and compartments on the BR-D4C to make it the best golf cart bag for storage space. I appreciated that Callaway upped the ante with the putter well by adding a TPE Overmold, ensuring optimal shaft protection. Besides the club slots, you’ll find that the ORG 14 offers 11 pockets to keep your accessories, valuables, and apparel for your day out.
