Which brings me to a painting, a new and playful one, that our daughter, Alina, recently stumbled upon while hiking a green corner of the worldwide web, looking to ease the pain of Tax Day for her golf-nut father. It’s a watercolor called Chipping Season by a young artist named Liesel Anne Callahan. It depicts golfing chipmunks somewhere in Amen Corner. One of the things that makes the Masters tournament work is that it has a lot of rules, for players and fans and everyone else, and people are willing to follow them, in the name of decorum and orderliness. One of the things that makes this painting such a delight is that the artist doesn’t need any rules at all. The golfing chipmunks have their carry bags right on the green. Another group of golfing chipmunks are in a cart, with yellow-and-white surrey top, parked dangerously close to the green. The painting itself is a study in green in all its many shades.

I called Ms. Callahan. “I don’t golf, but I am surrounded by people who do,” starting with her husband, she said. She joins him in watching the Masters each year in their home in Lawrence, Kans. Liesel is a fourth-generation Jayhawk.

In real life, do golfing chipmunks wear green knickers or a pink-and-white striped skirt? No, but in Chipping Season they do. Do you see golf carts going the wrong way over the Hogan Bridge on 12? You do not, at least not during the CBS telecast of the Masters. It is a background moment in Chipping Season.

“I know Augusta has a lot of rules but as an artist I like to take what I see and make my own rules,” Callahan said.

During the telecast, she saw Amen Corner — the 11th green, the par-3 12th, the tee shot on 13 — and made it her own.

The artist’s father is a physician. Her mother is a musician, on organist. Her husband is a runner. They are newish parents. They live in a house with a view of a city park. When the Masters is on, Lawrence, some years, is still coming out of winter. Her brother-in-law came up with the name, Chipping Season.

“When I think of an animal that golfs, I think of chipmunks,” the artist said. “I don’t know why.”

2. For Every Mulligan, Take a Shot of Liquor

Let’s face it, we all need to take a few mulligans on the course from time to time. This drinking game will add a little spice and hilarity to the process. Any time a golfer in the group opts to take a mulligan, they also have to take a shot of liquor or down a beer.

3. Beer Bogey

Beer bogey is one of the most popular drinking games on the golf course, and it’s been around for quite a while. We’ll show you how it works.

Each golfer in the group adds up their score after each hole. You must take a sip, shot, or gulp for every stroke over par.

So, just to clarify, that means a bogey equals one drink, and a double bogey equals two drinks! If your group is filled with lots of high handicappers, it’s probably best to go with sips instead of shots or gulps! Otherwise, those quadruple bogeys will get every person in the group wasted way too quickly!

4. Sand Trap Drinking Game

This one is simple, but it’ll add some enjoyment to those dreaded bunker shots. Each time your golf ball lands in a bunker, you must take a shot or a sip. So, you must take three drinks if it takes three attempts to get out of a bunker.

5. Closest to the Pin

Here’s a great golf drinking game for all of the par 3 holes on the course. After every golfer hits their tee shot, determine which one is closest to the pin. Every other golfer in the group has to take a shot.

You can also opt to play a different version of this game on par 3 holes. Every golfer that doesn’t wind up on the green with their tee shot has to take a drink. That’ll make folks want to dial in their iron game a little more.

6. Water Hazard Drinking Game

This one is just like the sand trap drinking game but for water hazards. Every time a golfer winds up in the water, they have to take a drink. At least the drink will help ease the pain of losing yet another golf ball!

7. The Birdie Game

Every time a player in the group makes a birdie, the rest of the group has to take a drink! If you happen to be the best golfer in your group, it’ll be fun watching your buddies get a little woozy!

If you play in a group with lots of talented golfers, you could change to the Eagle Game instead. In that case, other golfers would have to drink when someone makes an eagle.

8. The Fairway Drinking Game

Here’s another golf drinking game that is simple and fun to play with larger groups. After every golfer hits their tee shot, the ones who didn’t end up in the fairway have to take a drink.

This game makes everyone focus on hitting the ball straighter instead of farther. It’ll also increase the number of drinks for each person because even the best golfers sometimes miss the fairway.

9. Even and Odd

This golf drinking game has nothing to do with the scorecard. Before a round of golf, players randomly decide on an even or odd number. Once that is determined, each golfer will take a shot or drink a beer on every even or odd hole.

Keep in mind that this game works best with shot glasses, so keep a few in your bag in case other players don’t bring their own. If a player drinks beer instead of liquor, they must finish their beer before that hole is completed. The punishment for not finishing the beer is that they must drink two on the next hole.

 10. Lower Your Score

Here’s a creative way to make your golf game more interesting. In this drinking game, each person in the group gets to deduct one stroke for each drink they consume. Be careful, though, because the ball gets much harder to hit after a number of drinks!

11. Highest Score Drinks

This drinking game is fun to play and easy to understand. At the end of each hole, the player with the highest score has to take a shot. If a few people in the group are already buzzed after nine holes, you can switch the rules to where the one with the lowest score on each hole has to take a shot.

12. Hole-In-One

Hole-in-ones don’t happen often, but they must be celebrated when they do. If anyone in the group scores an ace, every golfer has to take a shot or shotgun a beer. Also, make a picture of the golfer with the flag stick because a hole-in-one is a monumental achievement.

13. The Chip-In Game

Knocking a chip shot into the hole from the fringe, fairway, or rough is an incredible feeling. With this drinking game, every time a player chips in, the rest of the group has to take a drink. This may give golfers some extra motivation to work on their chip shots.

14. Tee Box Drinking Game

Here’s another fun one! Make every golfer in the group play from the tips (the tee box that is farthest away from the hole). Anyone who wants to play from a tee box that is closer must finish a drink before teeing off.

We’ll go through how to prepare for golfing in the rain and give you some top tips on how to adjust your play to get the most out of a rainy round on the course.

• Rain gloves: As you might have guessed, rain gloves are designed for wet weather, and the grip they provide actually improves when wet to help you keep hold of your club properly.
• An umbrella: Investing in a good golf umbrella can help keep the worst of the rain off of you while you walk between holes or wait for your shot. You might also want to consider getting an umbrella or a waterproof cover to protect your club bag.

5 tips for playing golf in the rain

1. Club up

Practice a more controlled swing with a wider stance to avoid slipping. You may also want to grip your club further down to make up for your feet sinking further into the ground, and move your ball further back so that you aren’t sweeping it up off of the wet grass.

The ‘casual water’ rule gives players free relief if golfers find their ball in ‘temporary water’, such as puddles. The rule allows you to move your ball to the nearest point of complete relief within one club-length (but not closer to the hole).

4. Hit putts with more force

Generally, the presence of water will reduce the speed of the greens, can cause your ball to hydroplane, and make your ball stray from its intended direction. To get the most out of your putts, it’s best to hit with more force and increase the length of your backstroke.

5. Swap your sand iron for a pitching wedge

Getting the ball out of sand is one of the toughest challenges a golfer can face, even more so when the rain compacts the sand.

A pitching wedge is better placed than a sand iron to overcome this challenge. The reason is that golf clubs are designed for normal sand, and a sand iron has bounce on its sole.

However, if the sand is compact, the last thing you want is a club with bounce on the sole, because it’ll strike the ground and bounce into the ball if the ground is hard.

You can either de-lock your sand iron grip to create more loft, or use a pitching wedge so the leading edge acts more like a knife, cutting through the sand in wet conditions.

Like any other sport, golf is filled with unique nuances and rules. Many things that may be considered normal off the course go against proper golf etiquette.

One of these gray areas has to do with the proper dress code on the golf course. For example, lots of folks may wonder if they can wear jeans to the golf course.

As a general rule, no, you cannot play golf in jeans. While there may be a few golf courses out there that allow jeans, those places are few and far between.

If you show up in jeans for your tee time, an employee in the pro shop may ask you to either change your pants or leave. If you don’t have any proper golf pants or slacks with you, you’ll have to buy some from the pro shop. Needless to say, this will hurt both your wallet and your pride.

Jeans just aren’t considered appropriate golf attire, so they should be avoided. You may be able to get away with jeans on the driving range, but we wouldn’t advise that either. Denim doesn’t allow your knees and legs the freedom to bend and flex as they need to in a proper golf swing.

Typical Dress Code to Play Golf

So, now that we’ve established that jeans aren’t accepted on the golf course, you may be left wondering what you can wear. In this section, we’ll list the specific dress code for both men and women on the golf course.

Men

To play golf, guys should opt for golf shirts or other types of polo shirts. Most courses require all patrons to wear a collared shirt, so keep that in mind before you head out the door for your tee time.

Gentlemen can choose between golf pants or golf shorts for their bottoms. A baseball cap or visor is also acceptable and can come in handy on a sunny day. Choosing to go without a cap is also okay.

If it’s fall or winter, find a nice-looking sweater or windbreaker to wear on the course. Both of these options will keep you warm and can be easily removed when the temperature warms up.

Sunglasses are also a good idea to keep on hand. They can shield your eyes from the sun’s glaring rays and help you to remain focused. However, I prefer not to wear sunglasses while playing golf because I feel it changes my depth perception too much.

Golf shoes must be worn at all times on the course. These are designed to help golfers turn easier during the golf swing. Keep in mind that most golf courses no longer allow golf shoes with metal spikes, so opt for plastic ones or the spikeless variety.

As far as other clothing accessories are concerned, make sure you wear a belt if your pants or shorts have belt loops. A lot of golf courses don’t allow folks to wear their shirts untucked. You don’t want to look silly with your shirt tucked in and belt loops showing with no belt.

Women

The dress code for women golfers is similar to the men’s. Things get a bit confusing when it comes to top choices, though, so ladies should check the course dress code they are playing that day. If you’re in doubt, simply call the pro shop or visit the course website.

Some courses allow women golfers to wear shirts with no collar, as long as the shirt has sleeves. However, if the shirt is sleeveless, it has to have a collar. For ladies, it’s probably best to opt for collared shirts or blouses since they are deemed proper golf clothes at every course.

If the temperature is a bit on the chilly side, women golfers should wear a sweater or light jacket. Most golf apparel companies offer good winter clothing options that are lightweight and won’t restrict any type of movement.

As for the bottoms, women golfers have lots of options. They can choose between golf pants, trousers, slacks, shorts, and skirts. Ladies can also opt for a skort, which is a combination between shorts and a skirt.

Like men, women golfers should also wear golf shoes on the course. While regular tennis shoes or sneakers are permitted, most folks find that golf shoes are just easier to swing in. Socks aren’t required, but not wearing them could result in some nasty blisters.

Men

Men should avoid showing up in a t-shirt, blue jeans, cargo shorts, athletic shorts, or flip-flops.

While that type of attire may be perfect for a day at the beach or lounging around the house, it’s not acceptable for a day on the course. Guys also shouldn’t show up in a sweatshirt and sweatpants. Even in extremely cold weather, neither of these articles of clothing will typically be permitted while golfing.

Women

The unacceptable attire list for women golfers is almost the same as for men. Ladies shouldn’t show up in tank tops, halters, sandals, or any type of denim. They should also avoid sweatpants and sweatshirts, even in cooler temperatures.

Women golfers also shouldn’t wear cargos or any other shorts that are super short. While most jackets are permitted in the winter, ladies should make sure that the one they choose isn’t too bulky. The last thing you want is to wear anything that will inhibit your natural golf swing.

One of the best things about playing golf with a group of buddies is the fun betting games you can play against each other. One of the most entertaining golf games is Wolf, which can be a refreshing break from standard stroke play.

If you’ve never played Wolf before, you’re in for a treat! Let’s go over the rules and basic strategies of this incredible game.

How to Play The Wolf Golf Game

Wolf is a type of match play where each hole is worth a set amount of points or dollars. Because of this type of scorekeeping, no person or team is ever really out of the match. There are many variations of Wolf, but let’s cover the basic rules first.

1. Decide The Wolf Rotation

Line up your crew on the first tee box and toss a tee into the air. Whichever golfer it points to gets to be the wolf on the first hole. Continue throwing the tee until the rotation is set. This will remain the same until the end of the round.

2. The Wolf Tees Off

After hitting his tee shot, the first player gets to decide if he wants to play as the lone wolf or with a wolf partner. If he chooses the partner route, he’ll then watch the second golfer tee off.

After that shot is completed, the wolf must decide whether to partner with that person or to pass and watch the third player hit. If the wolf doesn’t like the tee shot of the third player, he’s automatically paired with the fourth player.

3. If Partner Format is Chosen, Each Team Plays Their Best Ball

You know what Best Ball means if you’ve ever played in a golf scramble. If not, it simply means that you and your teammate will hit your shots and play whichever ball is the best.

4. The Team or Player With the Lowest Score Wins the Hole

So, if Team 1 scores a 3 on the hole and Team 2 scores a 4, Team 1 is declared the winner, and each player will receive 1 point. No points are awarded if there is a tie, whether in team format or lone wolf format.

5. Lone Wolf Holes Are Worth Triple

Now, before you get cocky and choose to go lone wolf each time you can, remember that each lone wolf hole is worth triple the points. This means that if the lone wolf wins, he’ll receive 3 points while his other non-wolf partners will get 0.

However, the inverse is also true. If the lone wolf doesn’t win the hole, the other three golfers get 3 points while the wolf gets 0. In other words, going the lone wolf route is a huge gamble.

How Many Players Do You Need to Play Wolf?

The Wolf golf game is typically played with four golfers, but some variations allow for three golfers to play. All that’s needed is a few modifications to the rules. With three golfers, there’s no predetermined order for who’s going to be the wolf.

After all golfers hit their tee shots, the one with the second longest drive automatically becomes the wolf. The other non-wolf partners become the wolf hunters. The rules are slightly different for par 3 holes, however, as the wolf is awarded to the player that is the second closest to the hole.

The scoring system for a threesome is also a bit different. After all three golfers have finished the hole, the wolf’s score is doubled and then compared to the combined score of the wolf hunters.

The team with the lowest net score wins. If the wolf wins, he gets two points, but if the non-wolf golfers win, they get one point each.

Players can also decide if they want the points to carry over in the case of a tie. For example, let’s say the wolf and the wolf hunters tie on the second hole. Those points will carry over to the third hole and make it worth double the amount.

1. Play with Confidence

Playing wolf on the golf course is a lot like playing poker at the casino. The golfer who isn’t afraid to take big risks exudes lots of confidence. This can psych out the other golfers in the crew and make them even more nervous.

One way to show confidence is to announce yourself as the blind lone wolf before you even hit your tee shot. This is known by many in the golfing world as the wolf hammer, and it carries a 4x multiplier of points instead of just 3x! This will shake your buddies up and let them know that you aren’t messing around.

2. Team Up with a High Handicapper

This tip only applies if you are playing Wolf with full handicaps involved. When that rule is instilled, it makes a lot of sense to team up with a high handicapper because they’re given at least one stroke per hole.

That means if the high handicapper scores a 5 on a hole, their score is actually recorded as a 4. This can make it easier for you to rack up points, especially if you happen to hit a poor tee shot as the wolf.

3. Don’t Take The Game Too Seriously

This may be the most important tip of all. While there’s nothing wrong with being competitive, remember that Wolf is supposed to be much more fun than regular stroke play. You aren’t playing for millions of dollars like on the PGA Tour, so just lighten up and have a good time out there!

What is a Texas Scramble?

Texas Scramble is a team-based golf format usually played by groups of two, three, or four players. 

Rather than playing with individual scores, each team works together in a Texas Scramble to achieve the best possible score on each hole. All the players in a team tee off, and then the team chooses the single best shot. From there, everyone plays their next shot from that chosen location, and again, the best shot amongst them is chosen. This continues until the ball is holed, with the team recording only the single best shots as the team score for that hole.

A Texas Scramble is a format that allows for a strategic and collaborative experience. It takes the pressure off individual players, which is why it’s popular for occasions like friendly competitions, amateur events, and charity days.

How to play a Texas Scramble

One of the best aspects of a Texas Scramble is that it’s easy to play. All you need to do is:

• Form teams: Texas Scramble teams are usually made up of four players, but there’s no reason you can’t play with two or three, or even more than four, as long as everyone involved agrees.
• Tee off: On each hole, every team member will hit their drives.
• Choose the best shot: The team then selects the best-positioned ball after everyone has taken their initial drive.
• Play from the chosen position: All the team members place their ball within one club’s length (but no nearer to the hole) of the selected shot and then take turns to play their next stroke.
• Repeat until the ball is holed: You continue selecting the best shot and playing from a club’s length of that location, until the first team member sinks their ball.
• Record the score: If the team collectively took four strokes to complete the hole, you record your score as four, rather than counting each individual stroke (so not a score of 16 if you had a team of four players each taking four strokes).
• Move on to the next hole: Repeat the above process until you’ve finished your round.
• Total and compare your scores: Once your team has a total score for your round, you can compare against other teams to see who got the lowest total and is the winner.

What are the rules of a Texas Scramble?

The rules of Texas Scramble are pretty simple to master and are usually reasonably flexible, too. The most important ones to be aware of are:

• Drive contribution: Often, every member of a team is required to contribute a set number of tee shots during a round, commonly at least three or four per player.
• Best shot choice: When it comes to choosing the best shot each time, you can either take a quick vote as a team or pick one team member to be the captain and have them make the decision.
• Ball placement: When placing your ball after the team selects the best shot, you must stay within one club’s length of the chosen ball, but you can’t move closer to the hole. Your ball must remain in the same condition as the chosen one, such as in the rough, on the fairway, or in a bunker.
• Order of play: Once a ball is selected as the best shot, the order in which players play the next shot is up to the team. It can be a strategic choice, especially as you get closer to the green.
• Putting: On the green, all players usually putt from the same spot until the ball is holed.

As you can see, there’s scope for flexibility in the rules of a Texas Scramble. What’s most important, though, is that the precise version of each rule is agreed upon beforehand and clearly communicated to everyone involved, so that each team plays by the same set of Texas Scramble rules.

Why is it called a Texas Scramble?

The format was actually called “Captain’s Choice” originally, as the captain of the team was the one who most often chose the best shot.

Whilst there’s no agreed-upon explanation as to how and why this format got a name change to Texas Scramble, it’s generally thought that it became popular in Texas from the 1930s to the 1950s thanks to its casual, player-friendly nature. The word “scramble” reflects the non-traditional, more relaxed style of play. 

Though often shortened simply to just Scramble, the “Texas” in Texas Scramble helps differentiate it from other team formats, like Florida Scramble or Las Vegas Scramble, which each have their own variations and rules.

What are the origins of Texas Scramble?

Just as with its name, the exact origins of the Texas Scramble aren’t clear.
