PAYSON, UT – Scott Golf is increasing its focus on partnerships with golf professionals, pro shops, and club fitters, offering a premium equipment line designed to provide a differentiated product story at retail.

The company’s lineup includes handcrafted irons, wedges, and putters, positioned for players seeking performance-driven equipment with a strong emphasis on feel and build quality.

“For shops, it’s not just about having another club on the wall,” said Petersen. “It’s about having something that stands out and gives golfers a reason to engage. That’s where we fit in.”

Scott Golf’s products are designed to complement fitting environments, where players can evaluate performance characteristics such as dispersion and strike consistency or allow the player to buy out of the shop.

“When golfers hit these, they notice the difference immediately,” Petersen added. “That gives pros and fitters something real to talk about, not just another list of specs.”

Scott added, “Some companies are known for one category and expand into wedges or putters because they feel they have to. At Scott Golf, our putters, irons, and wedges are all built to the same uncompromising standard. Every category is premium. Every club is luxury.”

Scott Golf continues to build relationships within the golf industry while maintaining a focused distribution strategy.

Does storing a left-behind club in your bag count toward your total? https://ultragolfing.com/does-storing-a-left-behind-club-in-your-bag-count-toward-your-total/ https://ultragolfing.com/does-storing-a-left-behind-club-in-your-bag-count-toward-your-total/#respond Tue, 21 Apr 2026 11:56:52 +0000 https://ultragolfing.com/does-storing-a-left-behind-club-in-your-bag-count-toward-your-total/

The Rules of Golf are tricky! Thankfully, we’ve got the guru. Our Rules Guy knows the book front to back. Got a question? He’s got all the answers.

During a local tournament, I walked onto a green and spotted a pitching wedge obviously left by a group ahead. After we all putted out, I picked up the wedge and put it in the basket of my cart, thinking I would drop it off at the clubhouse at the turn or give it to its owner if we caught up with him. After I teed off on the next hole, a fellow competitor said I had violated Rule 4, having more than 14 clubs in my possession which called for a 4-stroke penalty. I argued that I never intended to use the club and did not even put it in my bag, so it couldn’t be a violation. What say you? – Rick Itami, Liberty Lake, WA

We say kudos to you for not telling this dunderhead to go pound sand or taking even more drastic action.

Clearly, there can be quite a difference between referencing a Rule and knowing what in fact it says. Rule 4 — 4.1, to be exact — specifically covers this courteous act, noting it does not add to one’s club count, so long as the club isn’t used. Your competitor was at best wrong and at worst trying to get one (or four) over on you.

Can you carry clubs outside of your bag and not have them count toward the legal limit of 14? —Joseph Mills, Pinehurst, N.C.

Yes… but only if you balance them on your nose.

Come now, Joseph — 14 clubs maximum means 14 clubs maximum (per Rule 4.1b[1]), not 14 clubs and however many more you can stash under your armpit, in your opponent’s bag and behind bushes.

Breaching this rule is a two-stroke penalty per hole in stroke play, maximum two holes, and once you realize you’re in breach you must declare the extra clubs out of play immediately or be disqualified. Golf is a game of honor, not hoarding.

Under new ownership, South Carolina club embraces British model https://ultragolfing.com/under-new-ownership-south-carolina-club-embraces-british-model/ https://ultragolfing.com/under-new-ownership-south-carolina-club-embraces-british-model/#respond Sat, 28 Mar 2026 21:19:46 +0000 https://ultragolfing.com/under-new-ownership-south-carolina-club-embraces-british-model/

Every year, legions of American golfers fly to the British Isles to enjoy the game the UK way—on members’ courses that open their gates to outside play. Then they wing home to the United States, where such democratic welcomes at top private clubs are vanishingly rare.

From its birth nearly two years ago, Broomsedge Golf Club has counted among the exceptions. Now it’s going further.

Late last week the club announced that Baker Thompson has come on as majority owner and CEO. Thompson is no stranger to this corner of the golf world: he served as a founding member and club captain of the Lido, the highly-regarded Wisconsin club that sets aside a tranche of tee times for guests of Sand Valley just across the road. Thompson arrives with an ambitious build-out already in motion: four-bedroom cottages for members and guests and a food-and-beverage venue overlooking the course, with a second golf course to follow. Along the lines of such marquee courses as Ballybunion, North Berwick and Royal Dornoch, members and their guests will get priority but outsider will be able to book rooms and golf as well. “It felt like a great fit to be able to take Broomsedge to the next level and continue to embrace the UK/Lido model,” Thompson told Golf.com.

Situated in Rembert, S.C., on the same sandy belt that underlies Pinehurst two hours to the north, Broomsedge was built differently from the start. The driving force behind it was Mike Koprowski, an Air Force veteran who spent years as a policy analyst in Washington before pivoting to golf course design. Among his inspirations was Sand Hills, the pioneering minimalist layout in Nebraska that has long allowed non-members who have never played the course to request a tee time by writing a letter. Koprowski benefited from that policy firsthand, having gotten on the course that way with his father. After finding the Rembert site and financing its purchase with a military loan, he collaborated with architect Kyle Franz on a lay-of-the-land layout that runs across an unruly, pine-framed parcel. When Broomsedge opened in the fall of 2024, it adopted the Sand Hills stance: private, but not entirely sealed shut. Non-members could request a tee time, once.

Thompson first encountered Broomsedge on a trip south with Sand Valley co-developer Michael Keiser, and came away struck by the movement of the land and the piney terrain that framed it. Keiser is not an investor in Broomsedge but he has been a booster from the beginning and has now signed on as an advisor, a role he sees as paying forward the counsel he’s received from others, among them Sand Hills developer Dick Youngscap, Cabot co-founder Ben Cowan-Dewar, and his father, Bandon Dunes developer Mike Keiser. “Americans have always benefited overseas from the welcoming nature of clubs in the British Isles,” Keiser said. “There’s no reason that won’t work here.”

Until now, Broomsedge has operated with barebones infrastructure, including a pro shop run out of a trailer. The build-out and the club’s embrace of the British model comes at a pivotal time for Broomsedge and an interesting time in the industry. As it is in so many places, golf is booming across the Carolinas, with new courses sprouting across the sandhills and beyond. Most of the development is private. While appetite for top-tier golf is real, the access, for most players, is not. Broomsedge stands out in the balance it aims strike.

Does Club Brand Actually Matter for Mid-Handicap Golfers? – Golf News https://ultragolfing.com/does-club-brand-actually-matter-for-mid-handicap-golfers-golf-news/ https://ultragolfing.com/does-club-brand-actually-matter-for-mid-handicap-golfers-golf-news/#respond Wed, 18 Mar 2026 10:30:35 +0000 https://ultragolfing.com/does-club-brand-actually-matter-for-mid-handicap-golfers-golf-news/

Walk into any well-stocked pro shop, and the display case does its work immediately. Polished irons lined up by brand, each promising something the one next to it can’t quite deliver.

TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping – names that carry real weight in the game, and price tags to match. For a golfer playing off 12 or 18, the question worth asking is whether any of that brand prestige translates to a meaningful difference on the scorecard.

The short answer is: yes, but not in the way most equipment marketing would have you believe.

The Technology Gap Has Narrowed

Modern iron engineering has come a long way. The hollow-body construction, tungsten weighting, and variable-thickness face technology that were once reserved for tour staff bags are now standard across mid-range game-improvement sets from every major manufacturer. A golfer buying from Callaway, Ping, TaylorMade, or Srixon at almost any price point above the budget end of the market is getting genuine performance-grade engineering.

What that means in practice is that the gap between major brands in comparable categories has closed considerably over the past decade. The differences are real, but they are incremental – and for most mid-handicappers, the more consequential choice is iron category rather than brand name.

A cavity-back game-improvement iron from any reputable label will outperform a blade from a more prestigious one if your contact is inconsistent. Getting that category decision right matters more than which logo is stamped on the back.

What the Independent Testing Actually Shows

Independent equipment testing offers the clearest picture here. Hot list iron testing – which runs thousands of shots with launch monitors and mid-to-high handicap testers – consistently finds that performance differences between top brands in the same iron category are measurable but narrower than the price gap between them implies. Distance separations between the highest-performing game-improvement irons typically sit within a few yards of each other, and dispersion patterns from comparable models are far closer than any individual brand’s marketing suggests.

That’s not to say every iron is the same. Within categories, the spread from top to bottom is real. A mid-handicapper comparing a top-tier Titleist to a top-tier TaylorMade in the same forgiveness bracket is unlikely to notice a performance difference that meaningfully affects their scores.

Equipment cost often plays a role in equipment choices. For golfers weighing up that option, Next2NewGolf specialises in quality used clubs from the major manufacturers – a practical way to play premium brand technology without paying for the latest release cycle. Many of these clubs come from recent model years.

Golf News has covered several of the leading options directly, including a hands-on test of the Callaway Apex Ai300 irons – a premium game-improvement set that many mid-handicappers aim for. The verdict confirmed real forgiveness and distance gains over older equipment. But it also raised a question that more golfers should ask: Does accessing that engineering quality require buying at full current-season price, or is the same technology available in previous-generation form for less?

Where Brand Does Make a Real Difference

There are three areas where choosing a major brand over a budget or off-brand option makes a tangible difference for a mid-handicapper:

  • Custom fitting infrastructure. Ping, Callaway, TaylorMade, and Titleist all operate extensive fitting networks with wide options across shaft weight, flex, length, lie, and loft. Being properly fitted with a mid-range iron from a major brand will outperform a full-price but ill-fitted set from any manufacturer. A mid-handicapper who skips fittings and buys by brand name alone is only solving half the problem.
  • Manufacturing consistency. Major brands invest in quality control to guarantee that every iron in a set performs as intended. Variance in loft or lie across a cheaper set can introduce dispersion patterns that a golfer might spend months misattributing to their swing. For someone actively working to narrow their shot pattern and identify swing tendencies, that consistency matters.
  • Resale value and the second-hand market. Clubs from established brands hold their value and circulate widely in excellent condition from previous model years. That creates a real opportunity – particularly for mid-handicappers whose skills are still developing and who may not yet be ready to commit to a full-price specialist set.

Where Brand Matters Less Than You Think

The driver is the club where brand allegiance is most aggressively marketed and arguably least necessary. The USGA and R&A’s Distance Insights project – an extensive research program examining equipment performance and distance across all levels of the game – has informed strict conformance limits on driver performance. Caps on the coefficient of restitution (the spring-face effect) apply to every driver on the conforming list, from every manufacturer. That ceiling means the physical performance window between a legal driver from a premium brand and a legal driver from a lesser-known one is narrower than any side-by-side marketing comparison would suggest.

For mid-handicappers, the variables that most affect driving performance are shaft flex, total weight, and fitting – not the badge on the head. A properly fitted driver from a less prominent brand will often outperform an expensive name-brand one selected on reputation or aesthetics alone.

The same thinking applies to wedges. Vokey and Cleveland dominate tour bag counts, but grind selection and loft gapping matter far more to scoring at the club level than brand loyalty. The wedge game is one area where a less-celebrated brand offering the right grind for your short-game conditions can be a better call than paying a premium for a familiar name.

To put it plainly, here’s how brand relevance actually breaks down across the bag for a mid-handicapper:

Club What Actually Drives Performance Brand Relevance
Irons Category (GI vs blade), fitting, loft/lie High – consistency and fitting access matter
Driver Shaft flex, total weight, fitting Low – conformance rules cap the performance ceiling
Wedges Grind, loft gapping, bounce Low – fit for conditions beats brand loyalty
Putter Alignment aids, head style, feel Medium – consistency in manufacturing matters

It’s also worth noting how far forgiveness technology has advanced even within the established brands themselves: the newly launched Ping G740 irons are a recent example of how aggressively major manufacturers are pushing cavity-back engineering, which reinforces the point that the technology tier is the relevant variable, not just the logo on the club.

The Case for Previous-Generation Equipment

This argument rarely gets made loudly enough in the context of mid-handicap golf: for most players in the 10-22 handicap range, a set of irons from two or three model years ago – from any of the major premium brands – represents a strong equipment choice and is often available for a fraction of the current model’s retail price.

Iron technology doesn’t advance in dramatic annual leaps. The differences between a brand’s 2022 and 2025 irons are genuine but measured – small gains in ball speed, minor improvements in face deflection, and incremental tweaks to center of gravity positioning. A mid-handicapper won’t extract the last few percentage points from those gains. What they will get is access to the same fundamental engineering quality that was already in the older club.

The R&A’s Distance Insights research has long held that player skill remains the dominant variable in scoring performance, even as equipment has improved across the board. That’s a useful frame for any golfer reviewing their equipment budget: the biggest performance gains still come from the player, not the club.

Getting the Decision Right

Brand matters – but mainly as a shorthand for engineering investment, quality control, and access to fitting. Within the premium tier, the brand name is less important than the category, the fit, and whether the price point is justified for where your game currently sits.

A mid-handicapper playing properly fitted game-improvement irons from a two-year-old Callaway or Titleist set is in a stronger equipment position than one playing poorly fitted current-season blades from the same brands. The clubs don’t make the swing, but matching the right technology to your current game – new or used, this season or last – is where the real equipment decisions happen.

Colonial Country Club in Fort Myers, Florida, has recently completed a nine-month, $9 million renovation of its golf course. The project was led by Gordon Lewis, the original architect of the 24-year-old private course.

The renovation focused on Colonial’s greens. Lewis installed 21 new USGA-specification greens – the 18 for the course plus three practice greens, each grassed with new TifEagle Bermuda. The work also included a new irrigation system, a reduction in bunkers by 20 and a total re-grass of tees, fairways and rough with Bimini Bermuda. Crews also lifted and re-established waste areas that previously held water during the summer. A new 650-foot bulkhead was installed around the 18th green, and more than 400 trees and 20,000 landscaping plants were added.

“The renovation has transformed the course into something truly exceptional,” Colonial Country Club board president Dan Casciano said in a media release announcing completion of the renovation. “It is better than ever and raises the bar for the member experience across the entire club. This is a milestone we are proud of and one our members will feel every time they tee it up.”

Canterbury Golf Club has confirmed that its hugely successful Festival of Golf will return from 5 to 12 July 2026, with close to 1,400 golfers expected to tee it up across a packed seven day programme.

The week long celebration of the game, once again backed by Canterbury based accountancy firm Burgess Hodgson as headline sponsor, will showcase a variety of formats over the club’s classic Harry Colt designed course on the outskirts of the cathedral city.

The festival will then feature a broad mix of individual and team events, culminating in the Members Better Ball Stableford on Sunday 12 July.

General Manager Roger Hyder welcomed the expanded backing from the club’s long standing supporters.

“Burgess Hodgson have been long term supporters of Canterbury Golf Club and have always sponsored one of the competitions held through the week but this year they have really stepped up their support by agreeing to be the headline sponsor for the whole Festival,” he said.

“It would also be remiss of me to not thank our daily event sponsors Perspective, Shepherd Neame, Brakes, Café du Monde and WWMartin.”

Strong local backing for flagship week

Burgess Hodgson is a full service accountancy practice based in Canterbury, combining London level expertise with a local relationship led approach. Founded in London in 1938, the firm relocated to Canterbury in 1976 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the city this year.

Rachael Florence, Head of Marketing at Burgess Hodgson, said: “Supporting the Canterbury Golf Club Festival of Golf reflects long held values at Burgess Hodgson. BRAMSHAW GOLF CLUB CROWNED NATIONAL MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONS – Golf News https://ultragolfing.com/bramshaw-golf-club-crowned-national-matchplay-champions-golf-news/ https://ultragolfing.com/bramshaw-golf-club-crowned-national-matchplay-champions-golf-news/#respond Wed, 11 Feb 2026 23:15:39 +0000 https://ultragolfing.com/bramshaw-golf-club-crowned-national-matchplay-champions-golf-news/

Bramshaw Golf Club, near Lyndhurst, has been crowned National Team Matchplay Champions after a superb performance at the Academia Golf Club Classic in Spain.

The Hampshire side swept aside Yorkshire outfit Malton and Norton by 4.5 points to 0.5 in the grand final, staged at Montecastillo Golf and Country Club, to lift the national title in style.

Bramshaw’s squad of Mike Evans, Clayton Phelps, Dan Murphy, Ray Nother, Nick Thorne, Andy Macey and Andy Redman travelled to Spain for the semi finals having already battled through six rounds of competition.

Their impressive run included victory over 2024 losing finalists Farnham.

In the semi final they faced Middleton Golf Club from Kings Lynn and produced a commanding display to secure a 4 to 1 win, booking their place in the showpiece final against Malton and Norton.

From the opening tee shot of the final, Bramshaw were in control. Andy Macey, who has represented the club for five decades, set the tone with a superb 4 and 3 victory to claim the opening point. The momentum never shifted.

Ray Nother delivered the decisive blow on the 16th green to secure the championship, as Bramshaw powered to an emphatic 4.5 to 0.5 triumph.

Captain hails team effort after landmark season

Team captain Mike Evans praised the achievement after the victory.

“For Bramshaw to have qualified in the first place was a huge achievement so to walk away as 2025 Academia Champions surpassed all our expectations,” he said.

“The team played some superb golf and we could not be happier returning the trophy to Hampshire.”

While seven players made the trip to Spain for finals weekend, the success was very much a squad effort. Gary Anderson, Jeff Vanderman, Bruce Lawrence, Mark Ruth, Wayne Noble and Jon Maloney all played key roles in the earlier rounds as Bramshaw progressed through the competition.

The national triumph caps a remarkable period for the club. Earlier in the season Bramshaw lifted the Hampshire County Sevens title, the first time in 48 years the club had claimed the honour, underlining a resurgence that has now been crowned on the national stage.

Set in the stunning surroundings of the New Forest, Bramshaw Golf Club boasts two memorable, but hugely contrasting courses, and a comfortable boutique hotel in which to rest up between rounds. Words by Nick Bayly

It didn’t take me long to discover that they do things differently in the New Forest when I turned a corner just a mile or so off the M27 near Lyndhurst, and came across a pig trotting nonchalantly across the road.

And then, around the very next bend, I had to slow down to pass two donkeys that were greedily chewing at the hedgerow, seemingly oblivious as I tried to give them a wide berth on what was a narrow stretch of road.

Such scenes are common for golfers at Bramshaw Golf Club, whose membership all but shares the land around and on which its two 18-hole golf courses are built. At the oldest golf club in Hampshire, the relationship between man and beast goes back many generations, with the Royal & Ancient game first having been played on Brook Common back in the 1860s.

Under the private ownership of the Crosthwaite Eyres family since 1953 (whose current generation lives on the estate), Bramshaw is a fine example of a club living in harmony with its surroundings. As it falls within the confines of the New Forest National Park, animals have the right to roam – and roam they do, even if it means ambling across a fairway while you’re in mid-backswing.

This is certainly the case on the club’s historic Forest Course, an 18-hole, 5,574-yard layout that is almost unique to these shores. Built on common land, it’s golf at its most natural, with only the tees and greens being managed, while the fairways are left to take nature’s course, barring a bi-annual cut to keep them playable. While the greens are partially fenced off in order to preserve the sanctity of the putting surfaces, grazing cattle, deer and ponies are left free to leave the odd loose impediment for golfers to contend with.

With stunning countryside views, and some challenging topography below your feet, it’s safe to say that a round on the Forest Course will linger long in the memory. And, at just £25 for a round, it’s an absolute bargain providing you enter into the spirit of it all.

And while the National Park is quite rightly very strict about changes that can be made, the club is planning to redesign the course next year, altering the order of the layout in order to better accommodate golfers and wildlife. The revamped configuration is set to be open on April 1, 2017 – when the new season officially gets under way.

While the Forest Course makes for a fun round, more serious golfers will focus their attentions on the 6,400-yard Manor Course, which opened for play in 1972, and occupies land on the other side of the Bell Inn, which was once home to the clubhouse, but now provides 26 comfortable bedrooms and a bar and restaurant for all to enjoy.

With over 40 years under its belt, the Manor Course has matured into a fine parkland layout, which, while not long by modern standards, features a significant number of tight, tree-lined holes, making it a challenge for all handicap levels. And although there are just 30 bunkers to navigate, they are particularly well placed, especially around the smaller-than-average greens, where only the slightest misjudgment can leave you reaching for your most-lofted club.

Highlights for me included the second, a 550-yard par 5, which requires two lusty blows to leave you a delicate approach shot over a stream to a green tucked into a clearing in the forest; while the fifth, a 500-yard par five is another typical Bramshaw challenge, requiring a long and accurate drive to the left-hand corner of a left-to-right dogleg to set up the chance of reaching the green in two.

There are four excellent par threes to contend with, the longest of which, the 7th, weighs in at a hefty 225 yards off the back tees, and presents a stern test for the less assured ball striker. The 273-yard 12th and 325-yard 14th offer a bit of respite on the back nine, with big hitters assured of a decent birdie chance ahead of the challenges of the 15th – a long par five that bends around the tree line – while final two holes require yet more accurate driving, with out of bounds all down the left on the 17th, and the 18th requiring a pin-point tee shot to a hole that doglegs left at a right angle to set up an approach to the final green, which looks like a very small target indeed from the fairway. All told, it makes for a thoroughly entertaining game, set amid extremely beautiful, yet easy-walking surroundings.

A friendly proprietary club, with a spacious two-storey clubhouse and a well-stocked pro shop, Bramshaw boasts a healthy competition scene, busy seniors’ and ladies’ sections, and a growing and active junior section.

With two courses to play, and lots of other things to see and do in the area, an overnight stay is all but essential for the visiting golfer, with the Bell Inn providing the perfect place in which to hole up between rounds. Under the same family ownership as the golf club, it offers 28 extremely comfortable rooms – and two more besides the clubhouse – all boasting en-suite facilities and offering the very essence of country house hotel chic. The spacious restaurant serves up an excellent range of home-cooked food, many of it sourced from the estate and other local farms, while there is a wide choice of locally brewed ales to sample from the bar during the inevitable post-round analysis.

So whether you’re looking to sign up as a member, book your next golfing break, or plan a society outing, Bramshaw Golf Club really does tick all the boxes – just watch out for those donkeys!
