Russell Henley won last year at Bay Hill and, a year later, his bag has gotten both older and newer as he collected his sixth victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

At the 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational, Henley was playing Titleist’s GT3 driver and 4-wood, then the current in-line driver and fairway wood for the company, but still played the original T100 irons from 2019.

This year, those OG T100s are still in the bag, joined by an updated T250 4-iron, but he’s gone backward with his wood setup.

Henley won in Fort Worth with the now-6-year-old TSi3 driver and 4-wood. But instead of the TSi2 hybrid from the same line he played last year, Henley has upgraded to a new GTS3 7-wood that was released earlier this month.

That club was added to his bag just two weeks ago at the PGA Championship.

Meanwhile, Henley has also changed his wedge setup to the new SM11 but remains in the same grind setup, including a 60.04T lob wedge. The T-Grind is one of the most popular wedge grinds on Tour, but Henley is the first to notch a win with it this season.

“The most important thing for Russell with his 60 is knowing he has the most versatility when greenside,” Vokey Wedge rep Aaron Dill said. “It was this time last year when he first tested the 60.04T and added it to the bag. Right away Russell mentioned confidence when he opened the face, and he loved the way the wedge felt gliding through sand.”

Henley also hasn’t changed his Scotty Cameron Phantom 5 Tour Prototype putter, which he used to make over 100 feet of putts on Sunday, including his four birdies in a row to end the tournament.

“I got fitted with my coach Phil Kenyon and he was all about this putter for me. Just based on the feel and the forgiveness, combining those two, that was kind of a no-brainer where we landed,” Henley told Titleist about his putter. “Because, the greens, if they get really fast or if they’re a little on the slower side, because they can’t cut them because of wind or whatever it is, you want to have a putter that can perform in all those aspects. So I feel like that’s kind of the big thing is, can I bring this putter to any situation?”

Welcome to I Tried It, a GOLF.com series about golf items — apparel, gear, accessories, etc. — that we’ve recently taken out for a spin. As a frequent traveler, the allure of Golf on the Road always exists. I wonder what the San Francisco munis are like? What courses can I sneak on in Austin? I have that open invite in Philly — should I take it? 

And in my 20s, I chased it. I lugged clubs through every airport, on every trip — you name it. But before long, my very basic travel bag took a beating. I’d cringe as airline employees dragged and dropped it on the barrage carousel, the thin canvas surrounding my irons fraying in numerous spots. I had received the travel bag for free from an industry pal, and it lived up to one of life’s truisms: you get what you pay for. In this instance, I owned a cheap travel bag, and it made traveling with clubs worse. 

I had to hold its handle a certain way for the bag to roll straight. I had to be on linoleum floors, not sidewalks, for its wheels to keep from catching and dragging. Golf on the Road was less attractive with my travel setup. It was time for a change. 

I waited until the very last minute — visiting a PGA TOUR Superstore en route to the airport — but I landed in the right spot: the Club Glove Club Traveler.

Like Rickie Fowler and Max Homa, Drew Stoltz found the perfect combination of Cobra irons to complete his “flow” set.

Stoltz, who is a co-host of GOLF’s Subpar Podcast, added the Cobra 3DP MB irons for his 7-iron through pitching wedge. He then plays the Cobra 3DP Limited irons in the 4 through 6 irons.

“If you want to be able to hit lasters from 150 and in and then hit to the moon from 6 through 4, this is your set,” Stoltz said in the latest episode of Emergency 9, presented by Cobra.

Stoltz chose to add the 3DP MB irons in the 7 through pitching wedge in order to have more control of his trajectory.

“The easiest thing for me with these irons is the ability to hit it down,” Stoltz said. “A lot of the time I like to hit low wedges, low 9 irons and things like that. This makes it a lot easier. You get all the shot-making capabilities of a blade but you get more forgiveness.”

Stoltz stuck with the 3DP Limited irons in the 4 through 6 irons to get the needed juice on his longer irons.

“I’m trying to get the most out of this that I can,” Stoltz said. “I want my mishits to get the most distance, I want my off-center strikes to be the least off-line as possible. These give me the look that I like in an iron but also more forgiveness, easier to hit up in the air then it would for the MBs if I was playing those in the long irons.”

The Rules of Golf are tricky! Thankfully, we’ve got the guru. Our Rules Guy knows the book front to back. Got a question? He’s got all the answers.

During a local tournament, I walked onto a green and spotted a pitching wedge obviously left by a group ahead. After we all putted out, I picked up the wedge and put it in the basket of my cart, thinking I would drop it off at the clubhouse at the turn or give it to its owner if we caught up with him. After I teed off on the next hole, a fellow competitor said I had violated Rule 4, having more than 14 clubs in my possession which called for a 4-stroke penalty. I argued that I never intended to use the club and did not even put it in my bag, so it couldn’t be a violation. What say you? – Rick Itami, Liberty Lake, WA

We say kudos to you for not telling this dunderhead to go pound sand or taking even more drastic action.

Clearly, there can be quite a difference between referencing a Rule and knowing what in fact it says. Rule 4 — 4.1, to be exact — specifically covers this courteous act, noting it does not add to one’s club count, so long as the club isn’t used. Your competitor was at best wrong and at worst trying to get one (or four) over on you.

Can you carry clubs outside of your bag and not have them count toward the legal limit of 14? —Joseph Mills, Pinehurst, N.C.

Yes… but only if you balance them on your nose.

Come now, Joseph — 14 clubs maximum means 14 clubs maximum (per Rule 4.1b[1]), not 14 clubs and however many more you can stash under your armpit, in your opponent’s bag and behind bushes.

Breaching this rule is a two-stroke penalty per hole in stroke play, maximum two holes, and once you realize you’re in breach you must declare the extra clubs out of play immediately or be disqualified. Golf is a game of honor, not hoarding.

I am constantly searching for the best tools at the top-end of the bag. I’m not a great fairway-wood player, so I’m always on the search for the perfect fairway wood, and my love of hybrids has me testing tons of great options on the market.

I started looking around at home for what I may have overlooked to start the 2026 season, and some Mizuno JPX One metalwoods were staring me right in the face. Almost with a look of disappointment. So I brought them out to test. Let’s revisit the JPX One 22-degree hybrid and the JPX One 24-degree 9-wood.

Initial Impressions

It’s probably a surprise to most people that Mizuno makes a really good fairway metals and a great hybrid. It’s just not what the company is known for. Mizuno is all about irons. But that’s changed over the last five years. I actually played a ST-MAX 3-wood for a brief moment last year when I needed something I could easily hit off the deck without struggle. I also built up a ST-MAX 7-wood that I adored, until I went back to playing hybrids over high-lofted fairway woods.

The Mizuno stuff has always been really fast and very easy to hit. The Coretech Chamber up front, which lives on with improvements in the new JPX One lineup, does exactly what it’s marketed to do: provide ball speed across the face and consistent launch conditions on off-center hits. It also sounds fantastic. That Coretech Chamber kills the sound just enough that you get a nice hot crack off the face without it getting too offensive to the ears.

The new JPX One is also a beautiful new offering with a deep blue color that reflects nicely in the sunlight without getting distracting. It’s a nice nod to the Mizuno blue we’re all used to, but done in a different way to highlight the carbon in the crowns as well. It’s a great transition from the solid black top line as it fades into the dark blue carbon fiber.

Testing

I chose to test the 9-wood and the 22º hybrid against each other, not only to test the models again, but also to see what the differences would be between them. I lofted up the hybrid and lofted down the fairway wood to compare them both at 23º of loft. Nothing I saw was surprising, but it did offer reassurance about who these different clubs are built for.

The Mizuno JPX One 24-degree 9-wood launched significantly higher with more speed. It was living around 141 mph ball speed off the face at almost 20º of launch. With spin values in the high 4000s, I was getting about 215 yards out of the 9-wood, but with an average peak height of 142 feet. The good news? It was so easy. The JPX One options have been among the easiest fairway woods I have tested this year. Very similar to the reason I played the older ST-Max for a little bit, the forgiveness and consistency off the face were fantastic to see. For this slot in the bag, 141 mph of ball speed is plenty.

If you’re reading this thinking that sounds a bit too hot for your game, rest assured that the point I am trying to make here isn’t about my speed, but that the JPX One helps generate plenty of speed and launch. A peak height of 142 feet with the 9-wood is unfortunately not something usable for my bag, but it will absolutely be on my list of recommendations for players who want something easy to hit hard and hit high.

Mizuno JPX ONE Custom Hybrid

The JPX ONE Hybrids take the same design philosophy and apply it to a more compact, iron-replacement shape. Their Waffle Crown structure enhances face stability, enabling Mizuno’s engineers to reposition discretionary mass lower and deeper for optimal launch and spin control.
A uniform-thickness 1.8mm MAS1C face combines with the improved CORTECH Chamber and Speed Bevel sole design to produce exceptional speed through impact, even on strikes low on the face or from challenging turf conditions.

With the 22-degree Mizuno JPX One hybrid, I found a nice sweet spot and something much more manageable for my game.

I’m already a big fan of hybrids and have played them for pretty much my entire golf career, so this was more of a direct test for me. I was getting the same 215 yards of carry out of the hybrid, but at a much different window. The launch was a bit lower, closer to 16º, and the spin was at about 4000 rpm, a fantastic window for something I would consider a 4-hybrid. While the hybrid produced more speed for me than an iron would at this loft, it wasn’t quite as fast as the 9-wood, reaching only about 138 mph at its peak, with an average closer to 137, factoring in all the swings. Keep in mind, part of this is the difference in club length as well. What got me with the JPX One hybrid, though, was the creativity. I would classify this hybrid as more of a player’s hybrid, rather than a game-improvement one. Because it’s got such a consistent launch and spin window, it’s a very helpful tool for players that are looking for some versatility in this part of the bag. I was able to launch it just as easily as I could with the fairway wood, but it was much easier to hit different windows and flights with the hybrid, which is the reason I chose a hybrid for my bag.

Final Thoughts

Could the JPX One end up in my bag? Sure. I have nothing bad to say about the product. For me, the difference would be in the build. Based on the visual, sound, feel and ease of the 9-wood I tested out, I definitely want to do some follow-up with a 3-wood and see if there is a build there that could end up being useful for the bag. The next step for me is to go past the stock shaft I was testing and see if dialing in a better shaft for my game could be why I put these in the bag.

The fairway was impressive. It generates speed easily and launches the ball up in the air with little effort. This would be a great option for players looking for something a little more compact, with a slightly deeper face than some other offerings, while still getting the launch assistance needed to gap properly at the top of the bag. The hybrid was a great player’s hybrid offering lots of forgiveness, while maintaining speed and consistency across the face, which helps to be a bit more creative with flight choice. Both are great options for their respective customer.
